Portrait of a Young Man
(Timotheos) - 1432
The National Gallery, London
This portrait contains an inscription, in Greek, reading "Timotheos", the name of a famous musician of antiquity. This has lead to speculation that the subject was a musician, perhaps Gilles Binchois, who was one of the more famous Flemish composers of the time. He was also a fellow member, with Jan Van Eyck, of Philip the Good’s court.
