Self-Portrait - 1887

Self-Portrait - 1887
Kröller-Müller Museum, Otterlo
26¼" x 36"

Van Gogh wrote that the best way to improve as a painter was to study the human figure. Not able to afford a model, he frequently painted himself. There are thirty-five self-portraits in existence. The tortured nature of the artist can be clearly charted in these intensely honest self-examinations.
