Woodwork                                                                          home

In LCA you do a lot of Woodwork which is great.  Instead of sitting in History studying the french revolution you are using other skills in construction.  That is why the LCA course is so good because it concentrates on other skill you have instead of the academic skills.

In the LCA woodwork course you learn a lot of things you wouldn't learn in the normal leaving cert, like how to get a better finish on your wood by using different methods of applying the varnish or stain.

If you were doing the normal leaving cert the teacher would not have time to be doing all these extra things because you would only have a few classes a week.  we have done alot of practical work since we started and we have also done alot of written work.  i have learnt many new things about woodwork.  we also typed up our own set of safety rules in the woodshop.

Safety in the Wood shop.

Every accident has a cause, but with care and foresight many can be avoided.

Do not wear loose clothes, especially ties.  They can easily get caught in machines.

Never use a hammer or mallet with a loose head.

Never place your hand in front of a moving chisel.

Do not run with a tool in your hand.

Avoid horseplay in the woodwork room.

Never use a machine without permission, or        without being showed how to operate the machine.

Never remove the guard from a machine when using   it.

Always report an accident to the teacher, no matter     how small it is.

Do not distract another person while they are using    tools or a machine.

Make no attempt to use a gas appliance that has been left on.

Do not attempt to use a machine with loose or bare     cables, inform the teacher immediately.
